Crowds gather in New York to protest vaccine mandates

Hundreds of protestors, with many in Police department and Fire department gear, clogged the Brooklyn Bridge roadway on Monday to fight against Mayor DeBlasio’s vaccine mandate for all city workers. 

The mandate will cause over 160,000 city employees, such as police and firefighters, to become vaccinated. It will take effect this Friday at 5 pm. The protestors held up signs stating “We will not comply” and waved the American flags, all the while blocking the lanes to Manhattan. The march ended outside of City Hall where they stated the pledge of allegiance and shouted statements that were anti- de Blasio.

Many of the protestors were cops, firefighters, and Department of Correction officers. The Police Benevolent Association, the largest cop union in New York City, filed a lawsuit Monday to ask a judge to block de Blasio’s mandate from taking effect (New York Daily News). 

City workers who don’t show proof of vaccination by at least one dose on Friday, will be suspended without pay starting next week. On Monday, de Blasio stated his administration has contingency plans in place in regards to covering for potential mandate-related staff shortages.
