Former congressman and presidential candidate, Robert “Beto” O’Rourke is reportedly planning another campaign to run for Texas governor.
According to Axios, state political operatives suggest O’Rourke will announce his bid for governor later this week. Recently, Republican Governor Greg Abbott has received support and criticism for passing abortion legislation, attempting to close the southern border, and maintaining lax COVID-19 policies.
Axios reported, “A new poll for the Dallas Morning News shows that O’Rourke has narrowed the gap with Abbott in a hypothetical matchup, down, 37%-42%. In July, O’Rourke faced a 12-point deficit, 33%-45%. Over the summer, Abbot has seen his approval rating sink to 41%, with 50% disapproving, in a separate poll.”
Texas Democrats continue to express hope for the historically red state to turn a blue tide, however after President Trump won the state in 2020, this political shift seems unlikely. O’Rourke is joining a number of Texas governor hopefuls, including actor Matthew McConaughey.
