Candace Owens facing $20 million defamation lawsuit filed by Kim Klacik

Kimberly Klacik, a failed Republican congressional candidate, filed a defamation suit against Republican political commentator Candace Owens and asked for $20 million in damages.

The feud between Klacik and Owens seemingly began when Owens tweeted about Juneteenth and talked about Black Americans being used as political pawns. Klacik fired back claiming Owens had little interaction with Black Americans. A few days later, Owens posted a 44 minute video to her Instagram making strong claims about Klacik. In the video, Owens alleged that Klacik had committed campaign fraud and money laundering, took illegal substances, and was the ‘madame’ of and a stripper at a strip club supposedly owned by her husband (The Baltimore Sun). She also said that Klacik’s nonprofit, Potential Me, was illegitimate. 

Klacik ran for a seat in Congress for the Baltimore district and received endorsements from several high profile Republicans, including former president Donald Trump.

Klacik filed the lawsuit with the Baltimore County Circuit Court. In the court documents she filed, she claimed that she lost a book deal, a contract with a “nationally recognized vendor” ended, and politicians cancelled appearances for her fundraisers. Klacik has apparently sent letters to Owens requesting that she take the video down, but it has remained on Owens’ Instagram page. Klacik has also blocked Owens on Instagram.

In a statement, Klacik’s attorney, Jacob Frenkel, said, “Baseless character assassination has no place in political dialogue. The defendant chose to use her huge social media platform to attack a respected Baltimore political figure; we are using the proper forum — the power of the courts — to respond. The detail in Ms. Klacik’s lawsuit speaks for itself.”

Klacik has also released statements on her social media platforms. In one, she stated, “She has falsely accused me, private citizens & businesses of federal crimes so I would like this to play out in court rather [than] social media.”
