Popular gamer and self-defined socialist, Hasan Piker reportedly purchased a $2.7 million home in Los Angeles’ West Hollywood neighborhood.
Online, Piker is known as HasanAbi and has nearly 1.5 million followers on Twitch, a live streaming platform where he plays video games. Previously, Piker was a host on the Young Turks, a left-leaning show. Angry fans and fellow socialists suggested Piker has the ability to redistribute wealth if he can afford a multimillion-dollar home.
One user suggested, “if hasan piker really considered himself a socialist he would commit himself to never living anywhere, and definitely not in a house.” Social media personality Ethan Kelin defended Piker in a Tweet, saying “Yall really think Hasan shouldn’t be able to own a nice house and also champion for the poor and underprivileged?”
He continued, “There is a difference between making millions on twitch and paying 50% in taxes, and Jeff Bezos being worth 150 billion and paying no taxes.” Another Twitter user defended Piker, suggesting “don’t really see an issue with hasan buying a house. becoming rich off streaming probably ranks low on the scale of exploitation.” In response to all of the outrage, Piker said, “everyone collectively needs to calm down.”
