California police arrest man in car with 300 unopened ballots, gun, and drugs

California police arrested a man with 300 unopened recall ballots, a gun, and drugs in his vehicle.

The discovery of the stolen ballots was made at a convenience store in Torrance, a city in the Los Angeles area while the man was sleeping in his car. “Inside the vehicle, the officers found a loaded handgun, some narcotics, and then they found a bunch of mail and what turned out to be over 300 election ballots in the backseat of the vehicle,” said Sgt. Mark Ponegalek of the Torrance Police Department.

It is unclear as to why police were initially called to the scene, however, the unnamed man was arrested at a quarter to 11 PM on August 16th, in the parking lot of the store. The stolen ballots were addressed to residents in Lawndale, California and had yet to be opened or clearly altered.

After the reports, the Los Angeles County Registrar claimed there is no evidence to suggest the man was going to commit election fraud. Although, there is an ongoing investigation into his motives with help from LA county election offices and the US Postal Service.

California’s special election to recall Governor Gavin Newsom is ongoing, as mail-in ballots were delivered to every resident, regardless of whether they plan to vote by mail or in person at the polls. The official election day is September 14th, however, with mail-in ballots, the counting of ballots is suspected to prolong the release of election results.
