Police officer shot alongside Ella French paralyzed, may face lifelong disability

Officer Carlos Yanez of the Chicago Police Department was shot alongside the late Officer Ella French and is reportedly paralyzed, potentially for life.

The Yanez family opened a donation page, which has already raised over $150,000. “We are all still in disbelief of the incident,” wrote Yanez’s sister Nicole Yanez and sister-in-law Evelyn Gamboa. Yanez is a husband and a father to a three-year-old child.

After the incident, dozens of Chicago officers gathered at the University of Chicago Medical Center in memorial and support of their fellow officers. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was told not to visit the injured officer and his family, however, reports say she did so.

Yanez’s partner, Ella French, a 29-year-old police officer, was killed during an armed confrontation with three suspects, all of whom have been arrested and charged. Amid a recent surge in the city’s crime, French was one of 10 people killed and her partner was one of 64 wounded by gun violence in Chicago that weekend.
