Florida-based sports nutrition company called REDCON1 announced Tuesday it ‘has discontinued all support’ for Arnold Schwarzenegger’s fitness events after the bodybuilding icon’s strong remarks on vaccination in a recent chat with CNN.
Last week, ex-California governor took a pointed approach toward caution amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic while speaking with the network’s Bianna Golodryga. Schwarzenegger said, ‘There is a virus here. It kills people and the only way we prevent it is: Get vaccinated, wear masks, do social distancing, washing your hands all the time, and not just to think about, “Well my freedom is being kind of disturbed here. No, screw your freedom!”
The True Lies actor continued, “You have the freedom to wear no mask – but you know something? You’re a schmuck for not wearing a mask. Because you are supposed to protect your fellow Americans around you.” In response, REDCON1 founder Aaron Singerman said in an Instagram post, “Anyone who says ‘screw your freedoms’ is un-American, and REDCON1 is a patriotic pro-freedom brand. We support freedom of choice. We don’t want Arnold censored or cancelled. We just can’t support his opinion with our dollars.”
Singerman said that he’s attended the Ohio-based Arnold Classic fitness expo for 15 years and has “been a sponsor of the contest” for at least 10. “We’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars being a top sponsor of the event … but we can’t in good Conscience continue to support & be involved with someone who has such diametrically opposed beliefs,” he said.
Singerman said amid the business decision to detach from the expo, Schwarzenegger has been a longtime role model for him and initially got him interested in bodybuilding and fitness. “We choose you and your rights over and above an organization led by Arnold, who isn’t aligned with American views,” the company said in a news release.
