Two more DC police officers who were at the Capitol on Jan. 6 have committed suicide

The Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department announced that two more officers on duty during the January 6th demonstrations have committed suicide.

On July 29th, Officer Gunther Hashida was found dead in his home; he worked with the Emergency Response Team within the Special Operations Division. Earlier this month, on July 10th, Kyle DeFreytag also committed suicide. In total, four officers who responded to the US Capitol on January 6th have been reported as dead after committing suicide.

Ongoing investigations into the demonstrations have led the Department of Justice to arrest and charge over 500 Americans. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi organized a select committee to further investigate the incident.

Last week, Capitol Police testified to congress, Republican lawmaker Adam Schiff became “visibly emotional” after hearing an officer testify about the riot. “I’d like to think, as Amanda Gorman so eloquently said, that we’re not broken — we’re just unfinished.”

He continued, “Because if we’re no longer committed to a peaceful transfer of power after our elections if our side doesn’t win, then God help us. We deem elections illegitimate merely because they don’t go our way rather than trying to do better the next time, then God help us.”
