The Texas lawmakers who fled the state in protest of a Republican-led election bill are requesting care packages.
The Dallas Democrats’ Tweeted, “Our Dems in DC said they’d appreciate care packages from home. Before 5pm Tues, we’re collecting Dr. Pepper, salsa, hard candy, hairspray, travel toiletries, hand sanitizers, sewing kits, first aid, and/ or $ to pay shipping.” A follow-up Tweet includes an article about the care packages and says, “Texas Democrats in DC are holding up a mirror to America, doing their jobs, and now we need federal lawmakers to do theirs. Thanks to the dozens of supporters who are sending love from home!”
Earlier this month, a charter plane full of Democrats fled Texas for Washington, DC, where they subsequently caught COVID-19. The lawmakers’ demonstration began in May, when they first walked out of a legislative session to prevent the same election bill from passing.
Without those lawmakers present, legislation can not be passed causing stagnation and deflection from other important bills. After their second attempt, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has vowed to maintain a special session to pass the bill, target their pay, and arrest the Democrats upon their return.
