Alabama councilman uses racial slur to refer to colleagues during meeting

Alabama councilman Tommy Bryant used a racial slur to refer to colleagues during a meeting.

Bryant stood up and asked the room, “Do we have a house [n-word] in here?” in response to accusations that his wife used the slur. Bama Politics posted a video of the incident on Youtube. After calls for resignation, Bryant said he will not be considering stepping down, and went on to suggest, “I may even consider running for mayor next time.” According to Bryant, he was repeating language used by Alabama’s first black mayor, Wayman Newton, who allegedly used the slur to refer to another councilwoman, Veronica Freeman.

In the recording of the meeting, Freeman can be seen dramatically sobbing and other attendees appear shocked. Alabama Republican Party Chairman John Wahl said, “The Alabama Republican Party is deeply troubled by the racially charged outburst and disrespect shown by Councilman Tommy Bryant. Such language is completely unacceptable in any setting, and even more concerning coming from an elected official.”

The Alabama Democratic Party’s executive director, Wade Perry, suggested, “Alabama still has a long way to go when it comes to race, but cozying up to the KKK and using the N-word should make you unfit to serve.”
