LA sheriff’s office says they will not enforce indoor mask mandate: ‘not backed by science’

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department will not enforce the county’s health order reinstating mask wearing while indoors, saying the decision “is not backed by science.”

The indoor mask mandate, which applies to the vaccinated and takes effect before midnight Saturday, was reinstated in Los Angeles County Thursday. The sheriff’s office said that forcing vaccinated people and those who already contracted COVID-19 to wear masks indoors “is not backed by science.”

Current CDC guidance says people who are fully vaccinated do not need to wear a mask indoors or practice social distancing. The sheriff encouraged the department to “work collaboratively with the Board of Supervisors and law enforcement to establish mandates that are both achievable and supported by science.”

So far 61% of residents 16 and older are fully vaccinated, according to county data. At least seven other California counties issued mask recommndations this week, including San Francisco and Alameda [ABC News].
