Boston Pride shutting down amid accusations of excluding people of color, transgender people

Boston Pride announced it will be shutting down after 50 years amid calls for change from members of the LGBTQ community who accused it of excluding people of color and transgender people.

“It is clear to us that our community needs and wants change without the involvement of Boston Pride. We have heard the concerns of the QTBIPOC commuSnity and others. We care too much to stand in the way,” the organization said in a statement shared in their website. The advocacy group MassEquality told AP that while the dissolution is a loss for the LGBTQ community, they expect that a new organization will take over to organize the parade.

The group’s executive director announced last month that she would resign in response to the complaints about inclusion. The advocacy group MassEquality called the dissolution a loss for the community, but predicted that a new organization will take over the work of organizing the parade.

Boston Pride had organized several virtual events in June to honor Pride Month but was forced to cancel the annual parade because of the coronavirus pandemic. “Boston Pride is bigger than any organization,” MassEquality said in a statement. “This decision was made with a heavy heart, out of love and hope for a better future,” the statement said.
