The US Department of Homeland Security is warning of possible Independence Day militia gatherings in Washington, DC.
Yahoo News first obtained the law enforcement document. The report from the DHS’ Office of Intelligence and Analysis refers to FBI findings regarding “suspected violent extremists” gathering on July 4th at the Capitol. The event, “Million Man Patriots Gathering,” was identified on social media by the FBI. “The discussion on the platform indicated it was past time for them to have a ‘peaceful’ rally and inquired whether they were allowed to bring ‘toys’ to DC, likely referring to weapons,” the DHS report states.
However, the agencies are skeptical of whether or not the event will transpire. According to Capitol police, permits were granted to 11 events for Independence Day weekend, none of which have the name “Million Man Patriots Gathering.” In an effort to further investigate the potential event, the DHS, FBI, and Transportation Security Administration are in communication with one another. Earlier this year, following the January 6 Capitol riot, the DHS increased its focus on domestic terrorism.
An internal probe was launched to form a “comprehensive review of how to best prevent, detect and respond to threats related to domestic violent extremism within DHS,” Secretary Mayorkas wrote. “Given the evolving threat landscape and the grave risks posed by domestic violent extremism, including to our employees and operations, I have directed the Department to immediately begin a review of how to best prevent, detect, and respond to domestic violent extremism threats within DHS.” In tune with these efforts is the Biden administrations’ National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism, organized in June.
