Poll shows DeSantis up 20 points on most likely opponent for governor’s election in 2022

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is in good shape going into the 2022 governor’s election, with a nearly 20 point lead on his most likely Democrat challenger.

A recent poll from the Political Matrix shows Ron DeSantis ahead in the polls by a whopping 20 points. The poll was put up on Wednesday, and polled the two democrat challengers to the incumbent Republican of Florida, United States Representative Charlie Crist and Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried. Crist, who was elected Governor in 2006 as a Republican, polls the closest to DeSantis, but is still down 45% to 55%.

Fried, the only Democrat to win a statewide election in Florida since 2012, is down by a large margin, polling at just 39% of the vote as opposed to Crist’s 61%. It is likely that the reason for such a deficit is due to the name recognition of Charlie Crist, and the majority of Democrat voters gravitating toward a familiar face.

Crist’s past as a former Republican was not advantageous in that electorate, but it very well could have earned him support among those with no party affiliation. Crist still trailed DeSantis among that group 47% to 53%, and Fried performed slightly worse, 44% to 56%.
