Gay NFL player Carl Nassib receives backlash due to political beliefs

Within this past month, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib came out as gay. Just after this news broke, however, the football player received backlash for his political affiliation.

Just weeks ago, Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player to come out as gay. Since then, news has surfaced that Nassib is also a registered Republican. Due to this high-profile breaking news, the Las Vegas Raider immediately received backlash over his political party affiliation. Many within pro-LGBTQ circles and those on the left expressed much disappointment over the news, some even going so far as to posting screenshots of voter registration details regarding Nassib.

Political party affiliation usually comes up as speculation and rumor after a high-profile news story, typically when it involves a crime or a felony. Although these claims were unverified when they first surfaced, it is now confirmed that Carl Nassib is a registered Republican.

Prior to joining the Raiders, Nassib played in Tampa Bay for the Buccaneers, where he lived in Hillsborough County, Florida. According to Snopes, “We checked registration information on the official website of the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections, and found that Nassib registered as a Republican there on May 15, 2019.”
