Newly disclosed emails show the Biden campaign demanding Facebook censor posts on election integrity during the 2020 Presidential race.
CNN first published the emails in order to suggest that Big Tech companies like Facebook and Twitter do not censor enough. They write, “A cache of emails obtained by CNN highlight just how worried Democrats had become about misinformation on Facebook as Election Day approached — and how frustrated they were with Facebook’s response.” The misinformation refers to posts by former President Donald Trump and members of his campaign, including his son Donald Trump Jr.
In a video posted prior to the election, Don Jr. called for Republican supporters to volunteer on election day in response to concerns of election fraud. He analogized the volunteer efforts to an “army,” a parallel that the Biden campaign viewed as a call to violence. In an email to Facebook, a Biden correspondent wrote, “The fact that this video is still on your platform — and is being used to recruit some sort of, and I quote, ‘army for Trump’s election security effort’ — is astounding. It is impossible to reconcile this with any of the policies regarding voting and voter suppression that Facebook has released over the past 3 years and emphasized to us privately in several dozen conversations.”
In their analysis, CNN goes on to claim the spread of misinformation may carry into the upcoming 2022 elections if tech companies do not continue to censor such posts. Following the January 6 Capitol riot, Facebook and Twitter de-platformed former President Trump.
