The teacher reportedly saw the 41 year old Ira Cox-Berry walk up to the child and place his arms around her, after that the teacher ran outside and confronted the man, giving the girl time to escape. The teacher even managed to get the 20 other children on the playground safely into the school.

After that Cox-Berry attempted to infiltrate the school by punching open a window, shattering the glass and breaking in. The teacher then pulled out a firearm and kept the man at bay until authorities arrived. Authorities later concluded that the man was on drugs, and he was arrested and charged with child kidnapping.
