Entertainment Weekly has released a first look image of Billy Porter’s portrayal of the Fairy Godmother in an upcoming Prime exclusive remake of the classic Cinderella.
Director/writer Kay Cannon has reimagined the classic fairytale into a modernized jukebox musical that includes well-known pop songs and fresh takes on several of the main characters. Gaining particular buzz is Billy Porter, whose fashion choices and acting style have taken Hollywood by storm recently. Porter, who stars in the hit television series Pose, plays the role of Cinderella’s fairy godmother, Fab G. Porter’s imagining of the character “transcends human limitations and bends the idea of gender.” Cannon told Entertainment Weekly, “Billy articulated the idea [that] magic has no gender…He fits the role so well. He’s so ridiculously talented.” Cannon added, “To me, Billy is magic.”
The newly released image of Porter as the magical, gender non-conforming being gives fans a glimpse into the over-the-top costuming for Fab G. Designed by costume designer Ellen Mirojnik of Bridgerton fame, Porter sports a bright metallic orange, jeweled wrap coat that perfectly encapsulates the fabulous personality of Fab G. Porter also wears custom Jimmy Choo butterfly boots to complete the look. The film will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime in September this year, a change from its originally-planned theatrical release. Other big names in the movie include singer Camila Cabello, who plays Cinderella, Nicholas Galitzine playing Prince Robert, and Indina Menzel playing Cinderella’s stepmother.
