In 2020, Bill Gates resigned from his position on the Microsoft board of directors following an investigation into an alleged romantic affair with an employee.
New reports from the Wall Street Journal revealed that his departure preceded the end of the investigation, which began in 2019. According to the Journal, a female Microsoft engineer had “alleged in a letter that she had a sexual relationship over years with Mr. Gates.” The woman has not been named.
Gates’ spokesperson claims his resignation was unrelated, stating, “There was an affair almost 20 years ago which ended amicably. Bill’s decision to transition off the board was in no way related to this matter.”
“During the probe, some board members decided it was no longer suitable for Mr. Gates to sit as a director at the software company he started and led for decades,” the Journal wrote, quoting people “familiar with the matter.” Before the Journal published the allegations, the New York Times released a piece claiming Gates “developed a reputation for questionable conduct in work-related settings.” The separate piece claims that Gates “pursued women” who worked for him at Microsoft and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “It is extremely disappointing that there have been so many untruths published about the cause, the circumstances and the timeline of Bill Gates’ divorce,” said Gates’ spokesperson. Gates and his wife, Melinda announced their divorce earlier this month.
