Dr. Anthony Fauci, the president’s chief medical advisor and the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, claimed, “If you’re vaccinated and you’re outside, put aside your mask.”
Fauci added that “it would be a very unusual situation, if you were going into a completely crowded situation where people are essentially falling all over each other, then you wear a mask.” The statement was made in a segment with CBS This Morning. Fauci’s statement is in parallel to new guidelines from the CDC, which allow vaccinated people to be outside without a mask unless in a crowd.
During the interview, Fauci was asked about whether or not vaccination should be required for students to return to school. His response was, “I’m not so sure we should be requiring children at all. We should be encouraging them. But you got to be careful when you make a requirement of something. That usually gets you into a lot of pushback, understandable pushback.” However, Fauci has been a consistent proponent of vaccination. Despite the fact that no COVID-19 vaccine has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Thus far, the FDA has only authorized vaccine distribution for emergency use.
