The United States’ leading virologist, Dr. Anthony Fauci, has signaled that amid vaccination efforts and dropping COVID-19 statistics, it may soon be time to begin relaxing some of the indoor mask mandates across the country.
Asked on Sunday during an ABC interview about his response to former FDA Commissioner, Scott Gottlieb, saying last week that the United States needs to loosen up COVID restrictions as more people get vaccinated. Gottlieb believes that especially in states where COVID numbers are low and testing and vaccination numbers are high, restrictions should be lifted. “”Certainly outdoors, we shouldn’t be putting limits on gatherings anymore,” Gottlieb said. “The states where prevalence is low, vaccination rates are high, and we have good testing in place, we’re identifying infections, I think we could start lifting these restrictions indoors as well, on a broad basis,” Gottlieb told CBS’ Face the Nation last week.
Fauci largely agreed with Gottlieb’s assessment, telling ABC, “We do need to start being more liberal, as we get more people vaccinated.” He specified that current numbers are still too high to lift all the mandates, pointing out “We’re averaging about 43,000 a day. We’ve got to get it much, much lower than that. When that gets lower, the risk of any infection indoor or outdoor diminishes dramatically.” The United States is currently seeing the lowest number of COVID infections and deaths in months, as more adults receive vaccines.
