With President Biden’s recent provision in the “American Rescue Plan,” historically-Black Colleges and Universities are set to receive a record-setting $3B in funding.
Part of the $40B set aside in the bill’s relief plan for education, historically-Black Universities will be receiving $3B of federal funding in an attempt to “stand to benefit historically underserved students of color, allowing them to receive financial aid and ensuring HBCUs can stay afloat during the coronavirus pandemic.” In addition to Historically-Black Colleges and Universities, other minority-serving institutions will receive large federal grants in this “American Rescue Plan.”
However, the American Rescue Plan’s new provision has not been free from criticism. Many conservative Americans have argued that all American schools have been hit hard by the restrictions imposed during the pandemic, regardless of racial group. Earlier this year, the bill came under fire for a similar situation. Prior to this provision, the American Rescue Plan included a $5B package set aside specifically for Black American farmers and no White American farmers. Such an act reportedly left many White American farmers feeling betrayed by the Biden Administration.
