A father, who was accused of abducting his infant son, used the boy as a human shield during a shootout with Mississippi police, according to a report.
Eric Derell Smith, 30, allegedly kidnapped 4-month-old La’Mello Parker on Monday after police say he fatally shot his ex-girlfriend, Christin Parker, 32, and her 26-year-old nephew, Brandon Parker, near Baker, Louisiana. Smith was later spotted on Interstate 10 near the Louisiana-Mississippi state line, which started a police chase that ended in Harrison County with him using his biological son as a human shield from officers’ gunfire, a law enforcement source told the station. Between the Gulfport and D’Iberville exits, the suspect drove into the grass median. A shootout then began, during which Smith died.
Smith’s infant son was taken to the University and South Alabama University Hospital and later transferred to Children’s and Women’s Hospital, where he died. The residents in Christin Parker’s East Baton Rouge neighborhood were left in shock by the incident. One resident was quoted as saying “It’s quiet.” “This has never happened before…..we’ve been here over 11 years and we’ve never had a murder…..happen on this street.” The resident went onto say that her kids and Christin Parker’s kids often played together. “My heart goes out to her family, her children. We are praying for them.”
