Five Meriden, Connecticut police officers were hospitalized on Monday after being rammed twice by a vehicle following a traffic stop.
According to Meriden Police, at about 5:20pm on April 26, officers pulled over a vehicle matching the description of a shooter’s car from a recent scene elsewhere in the city. As officers approached the vehicle, the driver drove the car into two marked police vehicles before reversing and hitting a third, unmarked police vehicle. Two officers on foot were injured during the altercation and three more who were inside vehicles were also taken to local hospitals following the incident.
A press release from the Meriden Police on Tuesday said the five officers were being treated for various injuries resulting from the incident that “range from a concussion to a broken foot as well as all of the officers inside vehicles when struck, receiving bodily sprains and strains.”
After the driver rammed the police vehicles enough to drive away, his vehicle was located and two weapons believed to belong to the vehicle’s occupants were recovered nearby. Luis Camacho, 25, and 18-year-old Miguel Acevedo, both from Meriden, face charges related to the incident, and an unidentified young person was also arrested and has not been named due to being a minor.
Camacho is due to appear in court in New Haven on Monday, facing charges including five counts of second-degree assault, five counts of assault on a police officer, weapon in a motor vehicle, carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a high capacity magazine, four counts of evading responsibility, reckless driving, engaging police in a pursuit, misuse of license plates, having no insurance, driving without a license, operating an unregistered vehicle, and first-degree reckless endangerment. Acevedo has been charged with interfering with a police officer and is due to appear in court on June 7. The minor faces charges of carrying a pistol without a permit, weapons in a motor vehicle and interfering with an officer.
