Dr. Anthony Fauci criticizes Joe Rogan for saying young Americans don’t need to be vaccinated

Dr. Anthony Fauci criticiszed Joe Rogan on Wednesday after the popular podcaster claimed healthy young Americans don’t need to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

“I think you should get vaccinated if you’re vulnerable,” Joe Rogan said on his podcast The Joe Rogan Experience. “I think you should get vaccinated if you feel like — my parents are vaccinated. I’ve encouraged a lot of people to get — and people say, do you think it’s safe to get vaccinated? I’ve said, yeah, I think for the most part it’s safe to get vaccinated. I do. I do,” he said. “But if you’re like 21 years old, and you say to me, ‘Should I get vaccinated?’ I’ll go no,” he continued. “Are you healthy? Are you a healthy person? Like, look, don’t do anything stupid, but you should take care of yourself. You should — if you’re a healthy person, and you’re exercising all the time, and you’re young, and you’re eating well, like, I don’t think you need to worry about this.”

In an interview with the “Today” show, Fauci said Rogan’s logic was selfish and wrong-headed because unvaccinated young people could “inadvertently and innocently” spread the virus to others. “You’re talking about yourself in a vacuum,” he said. “If you want to only worry about yourself and not society, then that’s OK. But you’re saying to yourself, ‘Even if I get infected, I could do damage to somebody else even if I have no symptoms at all,’ and that’s the reason why you’ve got to be careful and get vaccinated.”

People who are not vaccinated “are propagating the outbreak,” because they can “inadvertently and innocently” get infected and transmit the virus to someone else who could be at risk of severe illness from Covid, Fauci said. (There are also some people who are vulnerable to Covid but are medically not able to get vaccinated due to health conditions or things like allergic reactions, for example.) “So if you want to only worry about yourself and not society, then that’s okay,” Fauci said. “But if you’re saying to yourself, even if I get infected, I could do damage to somebody else even if I have no symptoms at all, and that’s the reason why you’ve got to be careful and get vaccinated.”
