European Union planning on allowing fully vaccinated Americans to visit beginning this Summer

The European Union is planning on allowing fully vaccinated Americans to visit the continent beginning this Summer.

The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that US travelers will be able to travel within its borders if they’ve received the COVID shot. Americans traveling to Europe over the Summer this year will be required to show vaccination certificates to prove they have received a jab approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA). “The Americans, as far as I can see, use European Medicines Agency-approved vaccines,” von der Leyen said. Discussions are taking place to decide what form the certificates will take. The decision to use vaccine certificates comes one year after the EU imposed a non-essential travel ban on the United States.

Von der Leyen did not give an exact timeline on when Americans would be allowed to travel but she did say that it would depend “on the epidemiological situation, but the situation is improving in the United States, as it is, hopefully, also improving in the European Union.” Von der Leyen noted that the US appeared to be “on track” with vaccination distribution and was making “huge progress” in the effort to reach herd immunity. The US is planning on reaching the vaccination of 70 percent of the adult population by mid-June.
