AOC praises Biden’s first 100 days, says he “exceeded expectations that progressives had”

Progressive Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY) praised the Biden administration during a virtual town hall on Friday, saying the President’s performance in the first 100 days has “exceeded expectations that progressives had.”

AOC expanded on her positive view of the administration’s policies and bills thus far by explaining that Biden’s willingness to reach out and work with progressives in the party was impressive and that in spite of some differences Biden has acted both in good faith and by actively incorporating progressive ideas into his policies.

AOC specifically cited Biden’s environmental policy. The president made several pledges at an environmental summit on Earth Day earlier this month, including a promise to cut US greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030. Regarding the president’s ambitious emissions pledge, AOC added during the town hall on Friday, “I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that two years ago it was almost unthinkable to think that Joe Biden would be making an announcement like that.”

Some other progressive democrats have also recently commended the Biden administrations work during the first 100 days, including Progressive superstar, Senator Bernie Sanders (VT), who called Biden’s COVID relief package “the single most significant piece of legislation for working-class people that has been passed since the 1960s.” Progressives have also shown some support for Biden’s infrastructure plan, while largely agreeing it doesn’t quite go far enough.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman (NY) agreed with AOC on Twitter after the infrastructure plan was revealed, saying “Need to go way bigger.” AOC also said of the American Rescue Plan on Friday that while the bill is still overall too small, Biden’s “vision was right.“ She has also said of the bill, “My concern is that with the actual plan that they’ve presented, it doesn’t have the numbers necessary to actually do that they say they want to do, so that’s why we have been on the side of trying to pressure the administration to be a little bit more ambitious.”
