REPORT: Michigan lawmaker drove 50 miles with a blood alcohol content twice the legal limit

Michigan lawmaker Jewell Jones was pulled over by the police after recklessly driving drunk and threatened to call governor Whitmer.

Last week, Rep. Jewell Jones (D-MI) was pulled over by Michigan police in his black Chevy Tahoe after recklessly driving while drunk. Multiple 911 calls were made as the Michigan lawmaker allegedly drove for over 50 miles, driving the wrong way before rolling into a ditch. Police say that his blood alcohol content (BAC) was more than double the legal limit, and in the cupholder behind him sat a loaded handgun. 

“If you hit me, it’s going to be very bad for you. I’ll call Governor Whitmer right now,” Jones told the officers on April 6, according to a police report. “When I call Gretchen, they would have to hand over their IDs, badge numbers, everything.” Jones turned 26 just days after the incident, and is the youngest member of the Michigan House of Representatives ever.

According to the Washington Post, “Carolyn Henry, the chief assistant prosecutor in Livingston County, Michigan, confirmed to The Washington Post that the third-term lawmaker is facing eight charges, including four counts of resisting police and one for operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content of more than 0.17.” Rep. Jones and his attorney, Ali Hammond, jumped on the story immediately, and requested to comment to the Post themselves. Hammond said that Jones is an auxiliary police officer, and continued by saying Jones “will continue to faithfully serve” his constituents.
