Dark money in 2020 election cycle reportedly surpassed $1 billion and helped boost Biden

Dark money and shifty dealings surpassed $1 billion in the 2020 election cycle, the majority of which was given to top democrats and republicans.

The Center for Responsive Politics found that dark money topped $1 billion in the most recent election cycle. They found about $660 million came from anonymous donors, and about $514 going to various left-wing groups. Comparatively, right-wing groups and republican organizations received around $200 million. Current president Joe Biden received around $174 million in dark money donations, while former president Donald Trump received around $25.2 million. Critics of dark money have argued that voters should know who’s funding political advertisements and campaigns.

The Campaign Legal Center has called it a “serious threat to our democracy.” Issue One, another nonpartisan group that aims to reduce the influence of money in politics, has called it “the most toxic force in politics.” Democrats have introduced multiple proposals in the past to crack down on dark money interest groups and donors, despite being the largest benefactors themselves. Historically speaking, conservatives are generally the more dominating benefactors of dark money, outspending democrats by a 4-to-1 ratio in the past. Within the last decade, however, it has shifted into becoming a largely democratic effort.
