United Nations votes to elect China and Iran to women’s rights commission

Last Tuesday, the United Nations voted to elect China and Iran to a womens’ rights commission.

The United Nations makes a surprising move in electing both China and Iran to the Commission on the Status of Women, which is “exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women.” China and Iran, which are historically two of the most oppressive countries to women, joined the commission after Tuesday’s vote in the U.N. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2017 report, Iran ranked 140 out of 144 countries that are most oppressive to women. Additionally, The Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security Index ranked Iran 116 out of 153 countries because of their legal discrimination against women.

China, too, doesn’t have the best track record in regards to women’s rights. According to thejeffreylord.com, “China, who was also elected to the commission, controls the number of children a woman is allowed to have, allowing two children since 2015 after only allowing one child since 1979. China also forcefully sterilizes certain ethnic and racial groups of women to suppress their population.” While both of these countries are incredibly out of pocket choices for this role, the power they will hold on the committee itself remains to be seen.
