On Tuesday, a jury found Derek Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the case of George Floyd’s death.
Throughout the trial Judge Peter Cahill stated several times that the trial was getting close to mistrial. Cahill even called out Representative Maxine Waters on her comments about being “more confrontational.” Cahill said that he wished politicians would stay out of the trial and respect the court of law.
In an interview with an alternate juror named Lisa Christensen, there has been new insight in the dynamics of the courtroom. Christensen believed Chauvin to be guilty and cited Dr. Martin Tobin as the main influence in her thinking. Christensen said that she felt the defense failed to prove Chauvin’s innocence.
Christensen went on in the interview to state that she and the other jurors didn’t share their real names or occupations with each other in concern about “saying too much.” Later she admitted that juror intimidation played a role in the verdict by stating, “I didn’t want to go through the rioting.”
Even BLM activists themselves believe they played a role in the verdict. In a video tweeted by Drew Hernandez an activist clearly states over a megaphone, “The only reason once again, that we got this conviction is because we showed up.” The activist continues, “if we don’t attack this system from every single f*cking angle we will be here again.”
