Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reintroduces Green New Deal with added measures

After quite a while of silence on the topic, Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her more progressive splinter of the Democratic Party have reintroduced the Green New Deal.

These representatives are launching even more legislation into the plan, widening the scope to an idea already bipartisanly considered ambitious. The Green New Deal’s primary goal to address the issue of climate change is costly of both time and money, but claimed to be worth it all as it is an “existential crisis.” Cortez and Rep. Cori Bush are promoting a 1 trillion dollar fund for the Green New Deal for Cities Act, at the same time Cortez and Rep. Bernie Sanders are going for a public housing goal with the cost of up to 172 billion dollars.

Both Democrats as well as Republicans worry that the Green New Deal will cause catastrophic debt and financial detriment. Republicans have instead offered solutions with carbon capture and nuclear energy to the climate issue, adamantly opposing options that jeopardize the economy or tax rates. “For so long, our movement toward a sustainable future has been divided with really just this false notion that we have to choose between our planet and our economy,” Cortez said, addressing the argument of economic harm.
