The Biden Administration has pledged to slash greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 in response to the “climate crisis.” The pledge was made prior to a virtual Earth Day Climate Summit featuring 40 world leaders.
A fact sheet concerning the new target was published by the White House. The administration calls for a “50-52 percent reduction from 2005 levels in economy-wide net greenhouse gas pollution in 2030.” Continuing, “The target is consistent with the President’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by no later than 2050 and of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as the science demands.” During the Climate Summit, Biden referred to the climate as “the existential crisis of our time” and called on developed countries to lead the world in creating a sustainable future. “The United States isn’t waiting, we are resolving to take action.”
“I see an opportunity to create millions of good-paying middle-class union jobs. I see line workers laying thousands of miles of transmission lines for a clean, modern, resilient grid. … I see auto-workers building the next generation of electric vehicles.” The Biden Administration also outlined a plan to address the climate crisis internationally, in an effort to “confront the sharp drop in U.S. international climate finance during the FY 2018-2021 period, and understand the need to re-establish U.S. leadership in international climate diplomacy.”
The White House’s plan is to double US contributions to foreign countries seeking to improve their climate conservation. Meanwhile, the administration plans to end international investments in carbon-intensive fossil fuel projects and investing in climate-aligned developments. Lawmakers face drastically different climate plans, including the progressive Green New Deal with leaders like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. And recently, a new “commonsense” plan from GOP lawmakers, led by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. Efforts to address climate concerns continue to be controversial socially and politically.
