Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said Thursday she looks forward to debating Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez over AOC’s reintroduced Green New Deal resolution.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene claims Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has agreed to debate her on the economic policy behind the Green New Deal. Greene (R-Ga.) made the announcement on Twitter Wednesday, posting a photo of her speaking to Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) on the House floor with the message, “I’m glad I ran into you today @AOC to plan our debate about the Green New Deal.” Greene, a first-year lawmaker often critical of Ocasio-Cortez, has posted several messages on social media this month requesting that they debate the Democrats proposed environmental policies.
Initially offered in 2019 and reintroduced in the U.S. House of Representatives this week, the resolution, if successful, would declare the federal government has a duty to create a Green New Deal. Greene said in another tweet early Thursday that she read the proposal, which she likened to “The Communist Manifesto” written by socialist icon Karl Marx, adding: “Looking forward to debating you.”
The GOP lawmaker argued that a debate between her and Ocasio-Cortez would be “informative for the American People. They deserve to hear the two sides with pro’s and cons.” Greene proposed that she and AOC each be allowed to choose a moderator for the event, adding that the two could then find a major news network to host the debate. “Let’s do this for The People. What do you say?” she wrote in her final message of the thread.
