Disney parks introduces new ‘gender fluid’ costumes and ‘inclusion’ training for theme park cast members

Disney parks introduced new ‘gender fluid’ costumes and ‘inclusion’ training for theme park cast members.

Disney Parks will be introducing “gender flexible” costumes for its members who identify as non-binary. They will also now begin to allow visible tattoos and jewellery. This is the first time in Disney history that they will be loosening restrictions on dress code. Disney will also begin to remove gender references for staff costumes across the parks. As well, men will now be allowed to put on nail colors if they so choose but it must remain one solid color. Currently the parks with these new measures will be Disney world in Orlando, Florida and Disneyland in Anaheim, California. It is yet to be determined if these same measures will be implemented at Disney parks in Europe, China, Hong Kong, and Japan. However, there seems to be no intention to change the character costumes, meaning that men will not be playing female characters and women will not be playing male characters.

Chairman of Disney Parks stated “ We want our guests to see their own backgrounds and traditions reflected in the stories, experiences and products they encounter in their interactions with Disney, a Place Where Everyone is Welcome.” D’Amaro also said the new rules will “not only remain relevant in today’s workplace, but also enable our cast members to better express their cultures and individuality at work.” D’Amaro added “The world is changing, and we will change with it, and continue to be a source of joy and inspiration for all the world, We’ll never stop working to make sure that Disney is a welcoming place for all.”

Bounding into comics stated other changes that disney will be implementing. They stated “In promotion of their new focus on inclusivity, D’Amaro pointed to how the company would be ‘reimagining our attractions to be more inclusive, like upcoming enhancements to Jungle Cruise and new adventures with Princess Tiana’ and ‘celebrating the diverse and inspiring stories of our cast and fans with creator collaborations and exciting experiences, like The Soul of Jazz exhibit at Walt Disney World Resort”. Princess Tiana, from ‘the princess and the frog’, will become the lead figure in the disney ride ‘splash mountain’.
