Dr. Anthony Fauci says fully vaccinated Americans should still wear face masks

As of April 20th, 133,266,385 Americans have had the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (40.6% of the population) and 86,223,506 are fully vaccinated (26.3% of the population).

The rising vaccination numbers have had a growing amount of people questioning whether they still need to wear a mask after receiving both doses. However, Dr Fauci has emphasized the importance of wearing a mask even after being fully vaccinated. “If you’re one of the lucky few to have gotten a Covid-19 shot, it will be important to continue wearing a face covering until researchers can determine whether the vaccines prevent people from spreading the virus to others who aren’t vaccinated,” White House health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Thursday.

Fauci went on to say, “Currently, we do not have enough data to be able to say with confidence that the vaccines can prevent transmission,” he said in a tweet during an online Q&A session. “So even if vaccinated, you may still be able to spread the virus to vulnerable people.” Dr Fauci made an appearance on NBC’s “Meet The Press” and was asked why people should continue wearing masks after being fully vaccinated. “Okay, this is something that as we get more information, it’s going to be pulling back that you won’t have to,” Fauci began. “But currently, the reason is that when you get vaccinated, you are clearly diminishing dramatically your risk of getting infected.”

Dr Fauci went onto say, “However, what happens is, you might get infected and get absolutely no symptoms, not know you’re infected, and then inadvertently go into a situation with vulnerable people, and if you don’t if you don’t have a mask, you might inadvertently infect them. Now there’s a small risk of that, but it’s there.” Dr Fauci also discussed variants of the virus and the uncertainty of whether the vaccine can fully protect a person against them.

The CDC have confirmed that less than 0.01% of the people who have been vaccinated have caught Covid. Out of the 5800 who caught the virus, 396 required hospital treatment and 74 died. Professor Tara Smith has described this as “a really good scenario.” Professor Smith went on to say about the 5800 infections “Most of those have been mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic. That’s exactly what we were hoping for,” she added. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky stated that her agency still recommends that vaccinated people continue to wear masks, practice social distancing and avoid crowded areas.
