New data shows San Francisco lost most residents in last year than any other major city in US

According to new data, San Francisco, California lost the most residents between 2019 to 2020 among big cities.

The city lost approximately 18 individuals out of every 1000 compared to 9 out of 1000 just the year before. This statistic comes from a new report by the commercial realty firm CBRE group. Although many moved out of San Francisco to various different areas, the number of people moving to either Texas or Florida surged in 2020 compared to 2019. The amount of people who left San Francisco for Texas rose by 32.1 percent from 2019 to 2020. The amount of people who left San Francisco for Florida rose by a higher 46.2 percent. The data comes from the CBRE group. CBRE group used the USPS records of individual permanent address changes from 2019 to 2020 to show the movement of individuals.

CBRE also noted that most of those who left San Francisco went to California’s capital: Sacramento. The move between the two cities increased by 70% in 2020. The report states “The pandemic came just as the bulk of the large and increasingly affluent millennial cohort had reached prime family formation age, Consequently, millennials had been trending toward more suburban residencies even before COVID-19 came on the scene.” Last year, it was insinuated that the COVID-19 lockdown and taxes resulted in such an exodus from California that the state could lose a House seat and an electoral vote due to loss in population size. 

Several people have publicized their discontent for the bay area and have boasted about their move out of california. This includes Tesla CEO Elon Musk who confirmed that he moved to Texas after harshly criticizing California’s pandemic response. Elon tweeted “Tesla will now move its HQ and future programs to Texas/Nevada immediately. If we even retain Fremont manufacturing activity at all, it will be dependent on how Tesla is treated in the future. Tesla is the last carmaker left in CA.” Unicorn investor Keith Rabois moved to Miami Florida and noted that the Bay area is losing its tech talent. Rabois stated “ Many of the most ambitious people on the planet have lived here, but post-COVID, I think the concentration of talent has atrophied, perhaps permanently.”
