ICE building set on fire with people still inside during riots in Portland, Oregon

During riots in Portland, Oregon on Saturday night, a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building was set on fire, reportedly with people still inside.

On Sunday, the Portland Police Bureau confirmed that officers were sent out to the federal building around 11:30 PM to assist federal protective services once the fire was lit. PPB officers protected the scene while Portland Fire and Rescue crews extinguished the fire. Portland Fire and Rescue was able to put the fire out just before midnight. According to the Police Bureau, no arrests were made. A report by freelance reporter Grace Morgan stated that federal agents used pepper balls in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

Post Millennial editor-at-large Andy Ngo posted a video on Twitter of the building being set on fire. Ngo stated that federal agents were still inside of the building at the time of the fire. According to Ngo, it was the barricades in front of the building that prevented federal agents from leaving but they escaped through the rear of the building. There were also traffic cones placed on security cameras to prevent any rioters from being identified.

Portland’s crime rate has been on the rise since defunding the police department by $15 million. The Associated Press reported early last month, “More people died of gunfire last year in Portland — 40 — than the entire tally of homicides the previous year. The number of shootings — 900 — was nearly 2 1/2 times higher than the year before. The spike has continued this year, with more than 150 shootings, including 45 people wounded and 12 killed so far.” As gun violence and other forms of crime continue to rise, the Portland city council is planning on responding by using unarmed park rangers to combat gun violence.
