Biden administration seeks help from NASA employees to volunteer at overcrowded border facilities

The growing crisis at the border has led the Biden administration to seek help from NASA employees to volunteer at overcrowded border facilities.

The request was made via email and published on April 6 by the Intercept’s Ken Klippenstein. Within the email addressed to NASA employees, the agency offers their workers the opportunity to volunteer at border facilities for 120-days on behalf of the Department of Health and Human Services. The volunteer work is branded as, “Unaccompanied Children Program.”

The email arrives after claims that the Biden administration is planning to fill gaps in the southern  border wall, completing former President Trump’s project. This is despite Biden campaigning on an anti-border wall narrative and pausing Department of Defense funding for the border wall on his first day in office.

After reversing Trump’s southern border emergency, Biden stated, “Building a massive wall that spans the entire southern border is not a serious policy solution. It is a waste of money that diverts attention from genuine threats to our homeland security.” However, the border is facing an even greater crisis now. Since the arrival of the Biden presidency and the removal of many Trump-era policies, the southern border has experienced a significant influx in migrants. A series of border policy rollbacks and the false notion that the new administration will be more welcoming has motivated asylum seekers, along with a number of criminals and human traffickers.

This has fueled numerous humanitarian crises, including a child who was abandoned by smugglers and allegations of sexual assault. Furthermore, cases of COVID-19 have been flowing into the states from migrants, many of whom are now in government care. Limited resources, space, workers, and volunteers increase the severity of the border crisis. Children must be kept in government care until they are connected with family or a sponsor in the states. Although the Biden administration claims they are turning away large family units, they are forced to take in unaccompanied children. This policy was not enforced under the Trump administration, as a Title 42 travel ban was being implemented. Since March, an unprecedented 19,000 unaccompanied children have arrived at the southern border, making their scramble for volunteers no surprise.
