NPR issues correction over statement that Hunter Biden’s laptop was “discredited by US intelligence”

NPR (National Public Radio) issued a correction on Thursday, April 1st after Ron Elving of NPR falsely reported that Hunter Biden’s laptop was “discredited by US intelligence and independent investigations by news organizations.”

“A previous version of this story said that US intelligence had discredited the laptop story. US intelligence officials have not made a statement to that effect,” the NPR correction stated. NPR’s news editor, Terence Samuels, was quoted in October 2020 stating that they would not cover the laptop story because “we don’t want to waste our time on stories that are not really stories.” NPR issued the correction after critics blasted the non-profit media organization for the statement. Daniel Chaitin from the Washington Examiner tweeted “Ugh, NPR allowed this to be published. The Hunter Biden laptop story ‘was discredited by US intelligence and independent investigations by news organizations.’” Chaitin continued, saying, “No, the contents of the laptop have not been discredited.”

Hunter Biden’s now infamous laptop is alleged to contain details of his foreign business interests, including contacts in Russia and Ukraine along with some less than flattering photographs of Hunter Biden. Fox News confirmed last year the FBI and Justice Department officials concurred with an assessment from Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe that the laptop is not part of a Russian disinformation campaign targeting then-Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Last year, Ratcliffe said Hunter Biden’s laptop and the emails on it were “not part of some Russian disinformation campaign.”

Hunter Biden has confirmed that the laptop “certainly” could be his. Hunter also confirmed that he is under federal investigation for tax avoidance surrounding his overseas business dealings. A Delaware computer repairman, who has since revealed his identify, says Hunter Biden never came to pick up his laptop after dropping it off. He provided paperwork indicating there was an abandonment clause that granted him rights to abandoned equipment. Among the laptop’s contents, a 2017 email chain involving Hunter Biden and associates brokering a proposed business deal with a Chinese energy company described a 10 percent set-aside for the “big guy.” Former Hunter Biden business partner Tony Bobulinski publicly identified Joe Biden as the “big guy.” As of February, Hunter Biden still owned 10 percent of an investment fund controlled by Chinese state-owned entities. The fund was formed 12 days after Hunter Biden joined his father aboard Air Force Two for a December 2013 trip to Beijing.
