Vaccination site in Sacramento, California temporarily shut down for Anime enthusiast event

According to officials, a vaccination site near Sacramento, California will be shutting down temporarily in order of a pre-planned event, a swap meet.

The space, known as “The Grounds,” had been previously booked by SacAnime, an organization of Japanese anime enthusiasts, for this Spring. The Sacramento Bee reported that Placer County spokeswoman, Katie Combs-Prichard, confirmed interruptions in vaccinations Thursday and Friday. In response to this, county officials extended the site’s hours Monday through Wednesday to make up for the schedule conflict, according to Combs-Prichard. Additionally, she told the newspaper about 90% of this week’s roughly 5,400 appointments are second-dose appointments and wrote “so closure or not, the impact on first dose appointments available in the time window is not very large.” 

The Roseville venue will resume the administration of shots next week. The SacAnime twitter page on Wednesday tweeted “We are aware of the concerns regarding the placer county fairgrounds vaccinations clinic closing during our event. The clinic never had plans to be open during the scheduled time, and declined our offer to restrict our event space so they could remain open.” Californians age 50 to 64 will become eligible for vaccines on Thursday April 1,, as per Governor Newsom’s guidelines, with those 16 and up eligible on April 15. 

The Sacramento Bee reported the event will be a multi-day, in person event, which many health officials have advised against due to the pandemic. Dr. Vanessa Walker, a pulmonary and critical care physician, told KCRA-TV of Sacramento “We’re in this phase now where we don’t want to take absolutely every bit of joy in life away from our community. WE have to have some semblance of trying to do normal things, but I think we can do normal things in a safe way.” COVID-19 safety measures will be in place and enforced, including face masks and social distancing.
