Ohio teacher fired after telling students that the cause of George Floyd’s death is disputed

A Bishop Ready Area Highschool theology teacher was fired after making comments in a virtual class that the cause of George Floyd’s death is disputed.

The teacher, Deborah DelPrince, was fired late last month after being put on administrative leave the day before. DelPrince had been a teacher at the Catholic high school in the Columbus hilltop neighborhood since 1999. During a class on February 24th DelPrince responded to one of her student’s screens showing a photo of Lebron James wearing an “I can’t breathe” shirt. “That’s not necessarily true, but it perpetuates a myth against police,” DelPrince said in the virtual classroom as a student recorded. The Catholic Diocese of Columbus launched an investigation swiftly into the incident and released a statement saying a Bishop Ready instructor “made unsupported personal assertions and opinions.”

On the video DelPrince states that James is in no place to be “disrespectful to police officers” because he “probably doesn’t go anywhere without a bodyguard.” One student spoke up after the claim that Floyd’s cause of death is disputed and if DelPrince just said it was disputed that George Floyd couldn’t breathe. “Yes, it is disputed,” said the teacher. The student asked, “By who?” DelPrince responded, “By the tape.” The student sounding frustrated, began to ask another question but stopped and said “I’m sorry, never mind. ‘Cause I’m going to say something that’s going to get me in trouble.”

The video of the incident involving George Floyd showed officer Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck for close to nine minutes as Floyd said multiple times “I can’t breathe.” Chauvin remained on top of Floyd even after Floyd lost consciousness. Floyd was pronounced dead by the paramedics that arrived. Chauvin and the other three officers that stood by were fired by the Minneapolis police. Later, all four officers were charged. Chauvin currently stands trial this week for homicide.

Body cam footage presented a different side of the story. On the body cam it was shown that Floyd had been saying “I can’t breathe” before ever being put on the ground. Floyd appeared to be acting erratic as officers tried to calm him down. As the officers tried to get Floyd into the squad car, he started saying he was claustrophobic. One officer told him he would role down a window and sit with him, but Floyd refused to stay in the car. When asked, Floyd said he wasn’t on drugs. However, the autopsy revealed that Floyd had lethal amounts of fentanyl and smaller amounts of methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death.
