Florida Governor Ron DeSantis says he will sue the federal government over cruise ship ban

Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) stated on Friday that he would consider launching a lawsuit against the federal government over the cruise ship ban unless the CDC and federal government lifted the no sail coronavirus order by the beginning of summer.

The CDC’s current guidelines state that the ban will not be lifted until November first. They are also requiring the cruise lines to meet strict health, safety, and testing. Cruise lines are also required to hold mock voyages in order to better see how the virus will transmit on the massive ships. However, Governor DeSantis has said this order is based on outdated medical information and is “baseless.” According to PR News Wire, the global cruise ship industry contributes almost eight billion dollars to Florida’s economy alone. It is also estimated that the first 6 months of the pandemic has cost floria $3.2 billion in income, 49,500 jobs, and $2.3 billion in wages.

Governor DeSantis commented on the economics behind the cruise ban on Friday, stating, “The cruise industry is essential to our state’s economy and keeping it shut down until November would be devastating to the men and women who rely on the cruise lines to provide for themselves and their families. I urge the CDC to immediately rescind this baseless no-sail order to allow Floridians in this industry to get back to work.” The State’s Attorney General Ashley Moody has also condemned the CDC order and called it a federal overreach. “The federal government is acting outside its authority in singling out and docking the cruise industry while other tourism-based businesses continue to operate in accordance with health guidelines,” Moody stated during Friday’s roundtable.

Although the current guidelines from the CDC state that the cruise industry will not return until November first. The director of the CDC, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, has given some hope to the Sunshine State and the cruise industry during a White House press briefing when she stated that, at the rate at which the United States is vaccinating the population, it is possible that they could return in early summer.
