WATCH: President Biden stumbles three times walking up steps of Air Force One

President Biden’s trip to Georgia, made as part of a tour to promote the American Rescue Plan, began as he stumbled multiple times while walking up the steps to Air Force One on Friday.

The 78-year-old president jogged swiftly up the steps before he stumbled about halfway up, falling three times in the span of around three seconds. Each time, he caught himself with his left hand while holding onto the railing with his right hand, eventually falling onto his left knee. As he stood up, President Biden paused and appeared to adjust his left pant leg before continuing his light jog up the airstairs, then turning to give a salute before entering the cabin. 

White House principal deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that the president was doing “just great” and blamed the fall on heavy winds. “It’s pretty windy outside, it’s very windy. I almost fell coming up the steps myself. He is doing 100% fine,” she said, according to ABC News.

White House communications director Kate Bedingfield also tweeted about the incident, saying, “I know folks have seen that President Biden slipped on his way up the stairs to AF1, but I’m happy to report that he is just fine and did not even require any attention from the medical team who travels with him. Nothing more than a misstep on the stairs.” This, however, did not make right-wing meme accounts on social media go any softer on the president.

Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met later that day with Asian American leaders. “We talked about Tuesday’s mass shooting, about another example of public health crisis, of gun violence in this country,” Biden said in remarks at Emory University on Friday. “Eight people killed, seven women. Six were of Asian descent. All fellow Americans. Each one of them we mourn.” President Biden earlier this week ordered flags at the White House and on federal lands to be flown at half-staff, announcing that flags will remain lowered until sunset on March 22 “as a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence.”
