Joe Biden stated in a press conference that he will be calling for a thorough investigation into the officials enforcing Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy for border security.
President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy was an aspect of his administration’s immigration policy from April 2018 to June 2018, in which federal authorities were granted the jurisdiction to remove children and infants from parents or guardians with whom they entered the United States illegally. This family separation policy was intended to deter illegal immigration and was justified by ICE director Tom Homan at congress when they pushed back on the bill in 2018, in which he pointed to UN law and claimed that children are separated from their children when they commit a crime in the United States.
According to the policy, the adults found to have illegally entered the United States were held in federal jails or deported while the children were put under the supervision of the US Department of Health and Human Services. The SPLC reported in January of 2020 that 4,368 children were removed from their parents from April 2018 to June 2018, and the American Civil Liberties Union reported that around 1,100 more families have been separated since June 2018.
“I’ll commit that our Justice Department, our investigative arms, will make judgments about who is responsible… and whether or not the conduct is criminal across the board,” Biden said. “But as I said yesterday, I am not going to tell the Justice Department who they should prosecute and who they should not. There will be a thorough, thorough investigation of who is responsible and whether or not their responsibility is criminal, and if that is the [conclusion], the Attorney General will make that judgment,” Biden continued.
“I will introduce an immigration bill immediately and have it sent to the appropriate committees to begin movement,” Biden said. “I will in fact countermand executive orders that the president has in fact initiated that are contrary to what I think is either his authority and/or even if it’s his authority, contrary to the interests of the United States on environmental issues and a range of other things” (Breitbart).
Currently, the U.S. admits 1.2 million green card holders a year and Joe Biden’s proposal will likely revoke these applicants being admitted. Border security is a growing issue as more citizens of Mexico try to escape the violence of Narco-terrorism. However, there is a drastic difference in how Joe Biden will go about immigration than the Donald Trump administration (CBS).
