Biden names Health Secretary, COVID Czar, other key members to his health team.
President-Elect Joe Biden has announced his nominee for Health Secretary, naming Xavier Becerra, California’s attorney general. If confirmed, Becerra would be the first Latino-American to hold the title. Becerro stated his intentions via twitter saying, “As Secretary of Health and Human Services, I will build on our progress and ensure every American has access to quality, affordable health care — through this pandemic and beyond.” Biden also announced Dr. Rochelle Walensky, a Harvard disease specialist, as the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She is currently serving as co-chair for Bidens covid-19 advisory board.
Dr. Vivek Murthy was also nominated to be U.S Surgeon General. Murthy also acted as Surgeon General under the Obama administration. Murthy has been working closely with the Biden campaign being a key coronavirus adviser to Biden. Dr. Anthony Fauci will continue to serve as Chief Medical Adviser under the Biden administration. “Fauci will also continue in his role as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases,” as reported by Healthcare Finance. Other members to his health include Jeff Zients as Coordinator of the Covid-19 Response, Natalie Quillian as deputy coordinator of the Covid-19 response, and Dr. Marcella Nunez-Smith as Covid-19 equity task force chair.
According to Healthcare Finance, Biden stated, “This trusted and accomplished team of leaders will bring the highest level of integrity, scientific rigor, and crisis-management experience to one of the toughest challenges America has ever faced – getting the pandemic under control so that the American people can get back to work, back to their lives, and back to their loved ones.”
