According to NASA, four astronauts are set to launch to the space station on SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft.
NASA’s first commercial crew rotation mission, called SpaceX Crew-1, is going to mark its first launch mission including an international partner, SpaceX. NASA and SpaceX are to commence a pace of missions with astronauts on an American rocket from American soil to the International Space Station. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-1 is set to launch on Saturday, October 31st, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The four NASA astronauts, Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker, and Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will be aboard the Crew Dragon spacecraft along with Falcon 9 rocket. Michael Hopkins is the commander of the Crew-1 mission and Victor Glover is the pilot and second-in-command. Shannon Walker and Soichi Noguchi are the mission specialists for Crew-1. The astronauts named the spacecraft ‘Resilience’, in honor of their families, friends, colleagues, and fellow citizens as well as for the dedication and teamwork involved in the mission. The four astronauts are set to be back by spring 2021.
According to NASA, after lift-off, the Crew Dragon spacecraft will be orbiting the space station for about one day and then dock with the space station. The crew members will be carrying out scientific research on areas like botany, cancer, and technology which includes the growth of plants in space and leveraging microgravity to screen mRNA for treatment of leukemia. NASA stated, “such research and investigations onboard will benefit the upcoming missions to the Moon and Mars in the coming years”. After the mission, the crew will be picked up from the ocean after splashdown just off Florida’s coast.
