Christian Tybring-Gjedde announced the 2021 nomination Wednesday on the “Fox News Rundown” podcast, saying he believed that Trump’s actions met the criteria set by Alfred Nobel for the prize: fellowship among nations, reduction of standing armies, and promotion of peace congresses. On the podcast, Tybring-Gjedde said that Trump is a peacemaker and that other people receive Nobel prizes without scrutiny of their personal records. Many people can nominate someone for a peace prize, including any member of a national assembly. The final decision is made by the five-person Nobel committee. Trump would become just the fifth US president to win the prize, following Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1920, Jimmy Carter in 2002 and Barack Obama in 2009. ~

Israel and the UAE agreed last month to a historic deal normalising relations and are scheduled to sign it at a White House ceremony on September 15. “No matter how Trump acts at home…he has absolutely a chance at getting the Nobel Peace Prize,” Tybring-Gjedde told The Associated Press news agency. Tybring-Gjedde was one of the two Norwegian MPs who had nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018 for his efforts to bring reconciliation between North and South Koreas. ~

Tybring-Gjedde, speaking in a Facebook post, said, “It is now to hope that the Nobel Committee is able to consider what Trump has achieved internationally and that it does not stumble in established prejudice against the US President.” Last year, Trump predicted that he would win the Nobel Prize “for a lot of things if they gave it out fairly, which they don’t.” Tybring-Gjedde’s daughter Mathilde, who is likewise a member of the Parliament in Norway, criticized the nomination in an email to CBS News, saying that “I did not nominate Donald Trump as I do not believe he is qualified to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.” Mathilde went on to state how she believes Trump does not fit the criteria to win the prize. ~
