18 years ago today, tragedy struck the heart of America. On September 11, 2001, the Islamic extremist group al-Queada led a coordinated attack on the United States. Hijacking four airplanes, the terrorist group planned to fly one plane into each building of the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and one into Washington DC. The first three aircraft hit their marks, while the aircraft aimed for DC crashed near Shanksville in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the terrorists. Almost 3,000 people lost their lives that day: 2,750 in New York, including more than 400 police officers and firefighters, 184 at the Pentagon, 40 in Pennsylvania, and all 19 terrorists. The attack remains the single deadliest terrorist attack in human history. ~
This attack inevitably changed foreign policy in the US. The evening of the attack, President Bush made it clear that the United States would “make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them.” The next morning, the President visited the site to address the rescue workers, who were searching for survivors. When one of the workers said that he could not hear what the president was saying, Bush again foreshadowed his administration’s future foriegn policy as he said, “I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear from all of us soon.” On September 20, President Bush announced the “War on Terror”, declaring that “Our war on terror begins with al-Qaeda, but it does not end there. It will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated.” On October 7, airstrikes by the US and Great Britain were launched against Taliban and al-Qaeda training camps. Since then, the US has been an incremental part in eradicating terrorism accross the world, such as the capturing of Saddam Hussein, former President of Iraq, and the assasignation of Osama bin Laden of al-Qeada by US Special Forces. ~
