These three students are not in critical condition. The suspected gunman used the last bullet from a .45 pistol on himself, and is currently in critical condition, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. The suspected shooter, who turned 16 on Tuesday, has been identified as Nathaniel Berhow. Police are not looking for any other suspects, and a weapon was recovered from the scene, according to CBS News. The shooting happened about 20 minutes before classes started, so the campus was not completely full. ~
Officials have not yet established a motive for the crime. Investigators have obtained a search warrant for what they believe to be the suspect’s home. Paul Delacourt, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s field office in Los Angeles, said authorities believe he acted alone. However, the investigation is still in its early stages so this information could change. Investigators currently are checking rumors that the suspect may have posted threats on social media. ~
“I hate to have Saugus be added to the names of Columbine, Parkland, Sandy Hook, but it’s a reality that affects us all throughout the nation — something that we’re going to have to figure out” stated Sheriff Villanueva. Vice President Mike Pence gave his condolences to families of the victims. Pence pledged that the President Donald Trump will work to end gun violence.”This administration will remain resolved to bring the scourge of mass shootings to an end, and we will not rest until we end this evil in our time and make our schools and our communities safe again,” he said to a group at NASA in northern California. ~
